STORY: A man-made floating city called the Ark, made up of hundreds of separate floating islands, is on the brink of all-out civil war. Originally built as an experimental self-sufficient and 100% "green" habitat, the reported rapid rise of the Earth's oceans has forced the Ark to become a refuge for humanity. Crammed with the original Ark founders, their descendants, as well as tens of thousands of refugees, the Ark exists in total isolation from the rest of the world. With 25 years of social unrest, the inhabitants of the Ark have reached their breaking point. It's up to you to decide the future of the Ark and the human race.

* Virtual Texturing - Brink's proprietary technology, Virtual Texturing, breaks new ground on current-gen consoles and PCs with an even greater focus on highly detailed characters, realistic environments, lighting, effects, and atmospherics. This competitive lead on the squad-combat genre helps thrust players into the gritty reality of the Ark's epic secluded arcology.

Half-Life 2

Half-Life 2 Review

Half-Life 2 Feature

  • Sequel to the hit first-person shooter
  • Scientist-with-a-crowbar Gordon Freeman joins a ragtag human resistance fighting extradimensional invaders for the survival of a conquered Earth
  • Unnervingly realistic graphics the likes of which have not been witnessed outside of a motion picture or pre-rendered cut scene
  • Realistic physics: objects have varied and appropriate mass, density, physical properties
  • For 1 player
In many ways, creating a sequel to Half-Life is an unenviable task. After all, the goal is to craft not just any ordinary game, but an improvement to a title that is widely considered to be the high water mark for first person shooters. Fortunately, Valve does not disappoint on their sophomore effort.

Half-Life 2 picks up exactly where its predecessor leaves off, with gamers stepping once more into Gordon Freeman's HVAC suit as he awakes at some indeterminate time in the future, now apparently in the employ of the mysterious G-Man. Humanity has been sold out to alien forces, and your job is to escape their thrall and lead the resistance to victory.

HL2's key successes are in a few critical areas, the first of which is the new physics & graphics engine, called Source. People and objects fall, fly, tip over, float, and break in an extraordinarily realistic fashion, and in-game puzzles often require you to use simple applications of physics to progress. Second, an elaborate facial structure system coupled with excellent voice acting make for some of the most believably human NPCs in gaming history. This is no small thing; you will find yourself actually caring about the characters who surround you, even those that are normally regarded as cannon fodder. Third, the level design exhibits a subtle brilliance, which frequently fools you into feeling like you're making your way through an organic environment and not a forced linear path. These elements combine to form one of the most truly immersive experiences ever captured on a PC.

This gaming bliss comes at a cost, however. If your computer isn't running the latest and greatest hardware, you may find yourself turning down a lot of the slick graphics to keep the machine from choking. Also, at the time of this writing the only two bundled multiplayer games are a barely updated version of Counter-Strike and HL2 DeathMatch. Counter-Strike: Source is every bit as fun as the original, but the DeathMatch is lackluster and contains only a handful of uninspired maps.

Overall, Half-Life 2 is a smashing success, every bit worthy of the prestige and respect that the franchise has been awarded. This is absolutely a game that every computer gaming enthusiast is going to want to have in their collection. -- Jon "Safety Monkey" Grover

Pros:

  • Advanced graphics and physics system provide highly immersive experience
  • Believable, expressive non-player characters
  • Fun, realistic level design
Cons:
  • Requires a very fast computer to play with all bells & whistles on
  • DeathMatch mode has few maps and is not terribly entertaining
Half-Life 2 delivers a new level of realistic action and excitement. Players return to the world of Gordon Freeman, as he returns to the Black Mesa research facility. The aliens are pouring into our world, and Freeman becomes part of a resistance group to stop them. New weapons, new enemies and new characters are waiting -- along with major enhancements in animation, artificial intelligence and graphics.

Unreal Tournament

Unreal Tournament Review

Unreal Tournament Feature

  • A white-knuckle SINGLE PLAYER experience like no other! Guide your team of configurable 'bots' (virtual teammates) against the deadliest gladiator bots in the galaxy and become the Unreal Grand Master.
  • The most spine-rattling online and offline MULTIPLAYER action ever. Take on bots and/or humans in new games like CAPTURE THE FLAG, ASSAULT, DOMINATION and new DEATHMATCH variantions that DO NOT REQUIRE INTERNET ACCESS.
  • With 50 LEVELS OF BATTLE, each one a work of art. A gtalleon ship, Egyptian tombs, submarines, speeding trains, space castles and much more! Playable online or offline in single player and multiplayer modes. These levels raise the standard of 3D action environments.
  • REALITY BENDING graphics and sound. With high-resolution textures and painstakingly detailed game worlds. Support the latest 3D accelerators but DOES NOT REQUIRE A 3D ACCELERATOR CARD!
  • All-new enhanced BIG-BODY COUNT WEAPONRY guaranteed to send giblets flying! More than 10 weapons - each with dual modes of fire - are at your disposal.
First-person combat has never been bloodier or faster paced than in Unreal Tournament, a game that pits you against computer-generated bots or online opponents in a kill-or-be-killed free-for-all. With weapons upgraded from its predecessor, this game offers scores of options for play. Games range from the simple Deathmatch to team options such as Capture the Flag. As the player, you can go it on your own against the toughest the galaxy has to offer or direct a group of hard cases against a similarly well armed foe. During play you can be fragged (killed) several times, respawning to take up the fight again--though without the rocket launcher or other guns you have carefully stockpiled.

Unreal Tournament has some amazing features, most particularly the tournament maps, which are complex, varied, and interesting. Initially a seemingly indecipherable maze loaded with weapons and health boosters, the geography of these spaces begins to make sense as you run from shootout to shootout. After getting fragged a couple of times, smart players will find themselves using these environments to their fullest advantage. Ducking down narrow chutes, for example, to leap out on unsuspecting enemies is very satisfying. The playing fields offer hazards of their own, of course--the danger of falling into toxic slime or hard vacuum is always present. Another nice aspect of the game is that online play runs with very little lag, allowing an intense multiplayer experience.

Don't be fooled by the word Tournament in the game title, though--Unreal Tournament has nothing to do with old-style chivalrous combat. Ambushing your enemies, ganging up on them, and blasting them to bits from behind is all part of the milieu, and if that's not enough, you can taunt your victims as you blow them away. The bots in the solo player mode have a wide range of nasty, misogynist taunts, even if your character happens to be female. These can be shut off in the options menu, but with the language and the gore this game really lives up to its Mature rating. It may appeal less to women or players looking for sportsmanlike diversion. --Alyx Dellamonica This software is BRAND NEW. Packaging may differ slightly from the stock photo above. Portal Review

Portal Feature

  • Award-winning, innovative gameplay
  • The first first-person puzzle action adventure game
  • Two bonus games introduce new play challenges
  • Support for level editing and mod creation - build your own Portal puzzles
  • Hours of single player gaming
Portal is an action/puzzle video game from Valve, creators of Half-Life 2 and Counter-Strike. The winner of over 40 awards, including 15 Game of the Year honors, it is one of the most original games on any platform in years and offers gamers hours of unique gameplay. Set in the mysterious Aperture Science Laboratories, Portal is designed to change the way players approach, manipulate and surmise the possibilities in a given environment; similar to how Half-Life 2’s Gravity Gun innovated new ways to leverage an object in any given situation. Players must solve physical puzzles and challenges by opening portals to maneuver objects, and themselves, through space.

The Story
Portal contains only two characters, the player-controlled Chell and GLaDOS (Genetic Lifeform and Disk Operating System), a computer AI that monitors, directs and misleads Chell in a kind of twisted experiment. It's not exactly a match made in heaven

Regardless, Chell must rely on information provided by GLaDOS to survive as she navigates through a series of mostly doorless rooms using the Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device ("portal gun"). The portal gun creates two portal ends, one orange and the other blue. Both are simultaneously a potential entrance and exit and objects, alive or otherwise, that travel through one end will exit the other at the same speed. In addition, portals create a visual and physical connection between two different locations in 3D space. Their ends are restricted to planar surfaces, but if the portal ends are on nonparallel planes, bizarre twists in geometry and gravity can occur as the player character is immediately reoriented to be upright with respect to gravity after leaving a portal. Chell can pass through open portals at will, but barriers, known as "Material Emancipation Grids" or 'fizzlers' prevent players from carrying objects beyond them. Luckily certain objects, known as 'companion cubes' can be tossed through. Once through these can then be used as the player wishes. Passage through these fields also closes any open portals, so it's important to look before you leap. It's Chell's challenge and yours to survive the hazards of the portals, including bobby traps, hidden gun turrets and the treachery of GLaDOS in the search for eventual freedom.
